There was joy for Inverclyde-based Riverside Youth Band when it took part in a very special television performance with Scottish singer Cammy Barnes.
The Port Glasgow-based band joined forces with Cammy, who has recently announced two dates at the Hydro in Glasgow, and the Young Portonian Theatre Group Choir in Grangemouth for a new version of Cammy's track, Bonnie's Song, for the STV Children's Appeal.
Around 35 members of Riverside took part in the event, which was recorded in Greenock Town Hall under the baton of musical director Mark Good and shown on the live broadcast on STV last Friday. A new arrangement was prepared for the occasion by Eoin Tonner.
The programme was presented by Lorraine Kelly and Riverside's Laura Good and Cameron Mitchell joined her on the sofa to chat about the experience.
Reflecting on the recording, Mark Good said: "For members of the band to join forces with Cammy Barnes and the Young Portonian Theatre Group Choir was an incredible experience.
"We all met at the recording for the first time and just went for it. Everyone was in tears - it was very special, with the diverse musical styles blending so nicely. Afterwards, the young people were able to chat with Cammy and get lots of pictures with him, which was an experience to treasure."
Duncan Galbraith, RYB chairperson, said: "Riverside's mantra is Opportunity Through Music and the collaboration with Cammy Barnes was a perfect example. The recording experience was completely new to our members, but they rose to the occasion and embraced the opportunity.
“Seeing the final broadcast on STV was very special, and the young people were a credit to Inverclyde."
The STV broadcast comes as Riverside prepares for a busy few months ahead, with a concert in Port Glasgow New Parish Church on Friday 27 November and the Scottish Concert Band Festival on Sunday 29 November, before a spate of festive engagements in the build-up to Christmas.
Riverside Youth Band rehearses in Port Glasgow New Parish Church on Friday afternoons, with more young brass and percussion players welcome to get involved. Contact Duncan at info@riversideyouthband.co.uk or call 07974 106 888.
