First 4BR podcast features John Wallace and Katrina Marzella Wheeler
This a must-watch video conversation between 4barsrest editor Iwan Fox and Scottish musician and SBBA patron John Wallace CBE with the cooperation band MD Katrina Marzella Wheeler ahead of the band’s Romantic Brass concert in Glasgow tomorrow (Saturday) evening.
The podcast is the first in a new 4BR series and is a fitting tribute to the work of John in arranging the music which will be featured in the concert which has been described as “celebrating life, music and the resilience of the human spirit”.
The concert, in support of Glasgow’s Beatson Cancer Clinic, is inspired by John’s remarkable musical journey, whose lifelong contributions to the brass band world have left an indelible mark.
During his recent treatment at the Beatson, John found solace and creative expression in transcribing music, which now forms the core of this heartfelt programme.
The evening’s repertoire – at the Sherbrooke Mosspark Parish Church, 240 Nithsdale Road, Glasgow, G41 5AD – includes transcriptions of works by Dvořák, Rimsky-Korsakov, Wagner, and Schumann.
The concert will be a powerful testament to the transformative power of music and its ability to connect, heal and inspire.
On completion of the podcast recording, Katrina remarked: “What a force of nature John Wallace is!
“As many of you know, John received treatment at the Beatson Cancer Charity clinic in Glasgow last year. Showing incredible strength of character, he decided to do huge transcriptions of music by Rimsky Korsakov and Dvorak to ‘pass the time in the ward’.
“The cooperation band and I are delighted to be performing these very pieces in a fundraising concert for the Beatson with guests from the hospital, special friends of John, and of course anyone who wishes to join us!
“Entry is free but we hope you can make a donation to the charity.”
