Record entries have been received for the forthcoming 2011 Scottish Youth Championships, due to take place at the prestigious Perth Concert Hall on 26th and 27th November 2011. There are now currently 37 youth bands who have confirmed their entry, to the competition, involving over 1,000 young brass band musicians from Scotland. This makes it the largest ever Scottish Youth Championships - yet another record entry year for the competition!
To meet this fantastic demand, the event has been strategically tailored to accommodate the volume of youngsters by spreading the five different youth sections across the whole of the weekend of 26th - 27th November. The Scottish Open Championships will also take place on Saturday 26th November, whilst the Scottish Challenge Cup (which caters for bands in Sections 1 to 4) will now take place the following weekend on 3 December at the Bonar Hall, University of Dundee.
The Scottish Brass Band Association is delighted with the promised attendance at the youth championships and Andrew Duncan, Development Manager for SBBA commented:
"The record entries for this year's competition are a testament to the immense amount of activity that is evolving in the youth brass band community throughout Scotland. This is a significant increase on last year's entry and we can foresee that with the success of our previous, current and future development projects there will be an even greater growth next year.
The Scottish Youth Championships has now really established itself as a landmark event for the youth brass band arena throughout Scotland. We are extremely excited about the positive response and very pleased to welcome Brass Sounds Inverclyde Youth, Galashiels Youth, Irvine and Dreghorn Youth, Kingdom Youth, Kinneil Youth, South Ayrshire Youth, The Big Noise Brass Band (Sistema Scotland) and St John Secondary School (Dundee) - eight bands entering for the first time this year.
We are also delighted to see that the increase in numbers is included in the ever popular Premier Section. This year five bands will be performing, including the defending champions Carnoustie and District Youth Band, each offering a short programme to the delight of the audience."
The competition organisers are looking forward to a highly successful weekend of brass band music-making and wish to thank all participants for their support. The weekend's Youth Championships offers entries to an unprecedented total of five different categories - Preparatory Section, Novice Section, Development Section, Senior Section and Premier Section - enabling bands at all stages of progress to experience the excitement and benefits of preparing for and fulfilling a competition performance to what could be an audience of over 1,000 enthusiastic supporters.
Andrew Duncan continued: "The required focus on accommodating the increased demand in the Scottish Youth Championship has been a heart-warming problem with which to contend. As a result of the logistical solutions now in place, we are delighted to still be in a position to welcome further entries in 3 out of the 5 categories namely the Preparatory, Novice and Premier sections. So, I would appeal to any bands who may still wish to take part in any of these available sections to contact John Gilmour (johngilmour@sbba.org.uk) as soon as possible to discuss their entry to this wonderful event."
