Coalburn to welcome trombone star

Monday 3 October 2016

Trombone virtuoso Davur Juul Magnussen is to lead a workshop in Coalburn.

MEMBERS of Coalburn bands are looking forward to a busy spell of concerts and workshops as the organisation looks to continue its momentum following the National Brass Band Championships.

Coalburn Silver Band is looking forward to its next concert performance where it will be joined by the intermediate band and vocalist Stephen Kerr at Trinity Church, Larkhall on Thursday, October 13 at 7.30pm. Audience members can pay on the door and proceeds will go to the church restoration fund.

The Coalburn organisation is also set to welcome a high-profile visitor as trombone virtuoso Davur Juul Magnussen prepares to lead a workshop in the town.

The event will see the principal trombone player of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra work with delegates in Woodpark Primary School, Lesmahagow, on Sunday, October 30 from 10am until 4pm.

Admission to the workshop is free, as is entry to a short concert at 3pm.

The event comes after Coalburn Silver Band travelled to the Centaur at Cheltenham Racecourse to represent Scotland in the second section of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

Coalburn joined 15 others bands from around the UK on the Saturday morning playing music written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, Stephen Bulla’s Images for Brass.

Coalburn was drawn fifth and on stage at 10.30am, ultimately coming in twelfth place despite gaining praise from the adjudicators. Gareth Bowman, Musical Director, commented: "We were slightly disappointed with the result but not the performance.

"The band worked really hard on this most enjoyable music and I would like to thank each and every member for their commitment."

Several band members made their contest debut at the event, with everyone enjoying a meal and an evening of karaoke  before heading home the following day.
