Eight bands lined up for 13th Innerleithen Youth Brass Band Contest

Young brass musicians from across the Borders, Lothians and central Scotland will gather in Innerleithen later this month for the 13th Innerleithen Youth Brass Band Contest.

The popular event, organised by St Ronan’s Silver Band, takes place at St Ronan’s School, Innerleithen, on Saturday 24 October, starting at 10am.

This year’s contest will welcome eight bands, with young musicians travelling from Peebles, Innerleithen, Galashiels, Penicuik, Dalkeith, Bathgate and Newtongrange. The day gives developing players the opportunity to perform in front of an audience, hear other youth bands and enjoy being part of a friendly event devoted to youth brass music.

The Innerleithen contest has become a well-established date in the youth brass calendar, bringing together players of different ages and stages of development and celebrating the work being done by youth bands and their tutors throughout the region.

Mark Cockburn, chair of St Ronan’s Silver Band, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming eight youth bands to Innerleithen this year. The contest is always a very positive day, with a great atmosphere and a real sense of encouragement between the young players, their tutors and families.

“Giving young musicians opportunities to perform is such an important part of their development, and it is wonderful to see bands coming together from communities across the Borders and beyond. We hope plenty of people will come along, support the performers and enjoy a great day of live brass music.”

As well as performances throughout the day, hot and cold snacks will be available at the venue.

Admission is £5 for adults, with children admitted free, and everyone is welcome.
