Croy duo take on canal walk challenge for Cheltenham

Friday 17 May 2024

As part of the band’s fundraising efforts to attend the National Finals in Cheltenham in September, two players from Croy Silver will be walking the length of the Forth and Clyde Canal, from Lock 1 at Carron Sea Lock, to lock 40 at Bowling Harbour.

Secretary and cornetist Carol Devlin and horn player Grace Cameron with the Scottish Third Section champion band are both excited about travelling to Cheltenham and have challenged themselves to put their best feet forward for the three-day venture over the Bank Holiday weekend 25-27 May.

Carol commented: "I have often wondered about walking the length of the canal and needed a reason to do it and a friend to keep me company.  I asked Grace and she agreed to do the challenge with me right away."

Grace added: "Being local to the Forth and Clyde Canal, I have enjoyed its rich history and walks along it for years, so I thought it was about time I saw the whole of it."

The duo will be covering a total distance of around 35 miles over the three days (see graphic). The route will be

Day 1: Lock 1 (to the East of the Kelpies) to Auchinstarry

Day 2: Auchinstarry to Lock 27

Day 3: Lock 27 to Bowling Harbour

Although Carol and Grace both enjoy exploring different walks, this will be a real test of their endurance over the three days.  If you are near the canal and can join them for a section or just give them a hearty cheer, they would love to see you.

You can keep track of their efforts and via the band's Facebook page (@CroySilverBand) and donations are welcome via either of the following links:
