Raising the profile of lower brass at St Mary’s Music School

Friday 29 December 2023

Two days of events exploring all things lower brass are being hosted by St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh, in association with East Lothian Music Service, the British Trombone Society, Buffet Crampon and Dopey Monkey.

Held on Saturday 24 February in Edinburgh and Sunday 25 February in Elgin, the days will feature masterclasses, presentations and performances by some of the UK's top players and educators as well as scratch ensembles and 'come and try' sessions.

The music school has partnered with leading UK brass players to create these events aimed at encouraging the take-up of the lower brass instruments within schools.

As well as celebrating and raising the profile of trombone, euphonium, tenor and baritone horn and tuba playing, St Mary’s Music School will be running a composition competition in which young people (ages 10-18) across Scotland are invited to submit a three-minute fanfare for lower brass.

The new fanfare should celebrate, or bring to attention to, some aspect of the composer’s local environment – e.g a landmark, person or group that holds significance – and the winner will have their work performed by professional musicians in the final concert of the day.

To be involved or to book free places, please contact the school’s Music Department Manager, Kate Aitken, at kaitken@smms.uk

Says Kate: “Whether you have just started instrumental lessons or you're considering taking your playing to the next level, there will be something to inspire you. Any further questions regarding the events can be directed to me and I will be delighted to chat to you further about what we're offering.”

All the information about the events can be found here, including how young brass players can get involved in the day.
