Young instrumentalists shine at two more area solo and ensemble contests

Two area associations held their solo and ensemble contests on Saturday – West of Scotland and Scottish Borders.

The WoS event took place at Bellshill Salvation Army, adjudicated by Whitburn solo euphonium Chris Shanks (cover picture with Andrea Crumlish) and accompanied by Michal Gajzler.

The Borders contest was held in Teviot Church, Hawick, where the adjudicator was Whitburn principal cornet Chris Bradley and the accompanist Cameron Mabon.

There were 17 entries in the various solo categories and six ensembles. Before the results were announced, Chris gave a short masterclass on vibrato and played the solo Share My Yoke to the delight of the audience.

All qualifiers will take part in the Scottish Youth Solo and Ensemble Championships at Bellshill Salvation Army on Saturday 25 March, commencing at 10.30am. The adjudicator will be celebrated trombonist Brett Baker and the accompanist will be Gina Baker on the piano.
