Croy mourns the passing of Matthew Campbell

Monday 30 May 2022

Croy Silver Band has been deeply saddened to learn of the passing of long-time member Matthew Campbell on Saturday 21 May.

Matthew joined the learners’ section of the band in 1962 and, three years later, he was part of a school quartet with other members of Croy Band which won the Scottish Schools’ Quartet Championship.

He took a few years off playing to help his beloved wife Mary raise their three children, Susannah, Caroline and Thomas. Sadly Thomas passed away from cancer in 2020 and Mary died suddenly on 18 March this year.

Matthew played in various positions including solo horn, solo euphonium and E♭ bass.  His true love, however, was playing the horn on which his unforced sweet sound was a joy to listen to.

Apart from his playing, he brought a delightful mixture of humour and mischief to the band that lightened many a rehearsal. He was regarded as a lovely gentleman who was always quietly ready to lend a hand with any banding task – helping sort music, carrying equipment, maintaining instruments.

Croy Silver Band’s thoughts and prayers are with daughters Susannah and Caroline, grandson Nathan and son-in-law Phillip.

Matthew's funeral will be held at St Patrick's RC Church in Kilsyth on Tuesday 7 June at 9.30am.
