Trombonists Joshua Parkhill and Iris Deane and baritone player Charlie Boax are Scotland’s young soloists of the year after winning their age categories in the Scottish Brass Band Association’s solo and ensembles finals in Glasgow at the weekend.

Twenty-six talented brass instrumentalists took part in three age categories after qualifying for the finals at regional competitions.

Selkirk Silver’s young trombonist Iris Deane won the Junior class (for players aged 12 and under); Charlie Boax, who is a baritone player with Irvine & Dreghorn, won the Intermediate section (16 and under); and Dalmellington trombonist Joshua Parkhill came out on top of the Youth entries (21 and under).

The young musicians’ solo performances were assessed by renowned euphonium soloist David Thornton. Many thanks to him and to Geneva for supporting the event.

There were also three entries in the intermediate ensemble class which was won by Stranraer A.

Well done to all the competitors and special congratulations to the winners.
