Bandmaster with 40 years service seeks successor at community band

Saturday 14 September 2019

A nonagenarian band master is urging someone to step forward to replace him at the helm of Montrose Town Band.

Jim Easton, 91, first joined the band in 1939 and took up the baton 40 years ago.

But a period of ill health earlier this year means Jim is now looking to take a temporary step back from his conducting duties, and he wants to make sure he is leaving the band in safe hands.

Retired joiner Jim, also a respected cornet player, has family connections with the band stretching back more than 100 years, and one was one the tradesmen who helped build the band's rehearsal space at Queens Close, Montrose.

Described by players as "a real inspiration" and "more than just our bandmaster", Jim has also taught and encouraged younger players to come through the ranks.

Although the band hopes to continue to play at church services and the annual Armistice Day commemorations without a conductor, they have been forced to cancel their popular annual concert while they search for someone to follow in Jim's footsteps.

Montrose Town Band currently has about 25 players and rehearse on Tuesday evenings.

Anyone interested in stepping into the role of bandmaster should email montrosetownband@hotmail.com or phone 07522 628606.
