Broxburn and Livingston Future Brass in 'Bonanza Weekend'

Tuesday 13 November 2018

Broxburn and Livingston Future Brass, one of Scotland’s newest youth bands, has been involved in its first ever ‘Bonanza Weekend’ held at Bathgate Fire Station!!

After forming in May this year, the band has gone from strength to strength and is looking forward to its first outing to Perth in November where it will participate in the SBBAs’ Scottish Youth Festival. The ‘Bonanza Weekend’ was intended to help the young players improve their playing and musical knowledge, and they benefited from the help of some experienced tutors in Ray Mundy, Theresa Wilkin and Musical Director Jim Bone.

The intensive tuition and rehearsals were a huge benefit to the young musicians and, over the course of the weekend, the standard of playing rocketed. Of course, added to the learning was the all important element of fun. This was aided by them chomping their way through a mountain of pizza, which was generously donated by Pizza Hut in Bathgate.

When not engaged with brass, the youngsters learned about home fire safety and CPR, led by the fire crews at Bathgate. They also had the chance to familiarise themselves with some fire service equipment, playing with the hoses and the rescue boat too! Future Brass Director, Laura McMahon commented: "It was fantastic to watch the children bonding with each other and having so much fun over the weekend. Our tutors worked diligently and brought out the best in all the players."

Laura added her thanks to the fire service for hosting the weekend, all the tutors for inspiring the children, Pizza Hut for their generosity and all the volunteers who gave up their time to help the weekend go so smoothly.

Broxburn and Livingston Future Brass rehearse in Broxburn Bowling Club on Sundays from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Anyone interested in going along for a visit should contact the band through its Facebook page.
