Brass Sounds Inverclyde reaching new heights

Members of Brass Sounds Inverclyde take a breather during their hike up Ben Nevis - by staging a concert.

MEMBERS of Brass Sounds Inverclyde (BSI) have scaled new heights - and raised nearly £2,000 - after performing at the top of Britain’s highest mountain.

The fourth section Scottish champion, and conductor Christopher Mansfield, took part in a string of performances during the recent climb, which saw nine members pulling on their hiking boots in a bid to raise money to support BSI’s trip to the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in September.

There was no van to carry gear up the mountain.

Repertoire included fanfare Mountain of Heaven, composed by Dave Collins for the occasion and a selection of hymns and traditional Scottish melodies. A reporter from STV joined the band for the hike.

A spokesman for BSI said: “The hike was tough for everyone but it was really satisfying to complete the trek.

“Thank you to everyone who supported us with our climb, including p2sl Ltd of Clydebank and Kickstarter sponsors. Funds raised will help get us to the National Brass Band Championships – and we'll be fighting fit too.”
