Renfrew in sponsored slimathon

Renfrew Burgh Band's slimmers

FIGHTING fit musicians at Renfrew Burgh Band are hoping to shed the pounds and raise plenty more in a sponsored slimathon.

The event comes as members aim to get in peak physical shape - and raise some much-needed funds - ahead of the band's performance at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in Cheltenham in September.

Mags Fegen, Catriona Black, Mairi Galbraith, Alison Reid and Raymond Thomson (all pictured, above) are among those taking part. The challenge saw them aiming to lose 16 lbs in 16 weeks and the slimmers are well on the way to smashing that target, as solo horn player Catriona Black explained. "The slimathon is terrific for us all. Everyone has stepped up the exercise and we're keeping an eye on what we're eating. We're all taking it very seriously.

"We would really appreciate any support people can give us as we try hard to raise some money to help us get to Cheltenham to represent Scotland. One pound from you will help shed many more from us."

Raymond Thomson, a cornet player with Renfrew Band, has lost ten pounds so far and is hoping to lose another four by the end of July.

He said: "I'm actually really enjoying the slimathon so far.

"My aim is to be a stone lighter by the Nationals compared to my weight at the Scottish Championships. After all, when you're competing against the best bands in Britain, you should be as fit as possible.

"Being lighter will keep us in good shape for rehearsals, improving our stamina. Any support we receive will help keep us motivated whenever there may be temptation to munch on a snack. Not only that, we can hopefully raise some much-needed money to help us get to Cheltenham."
