SBBA 2013 Conducting Weekend Workshops
URGENT NOTE for those attending
Change of venue for SBBA Conductor's Weekend Workshop
Due to emergency maintenance work, a change of venue has meant that the SBBA Conductor's Weekend Workshop is now taking place at Whitburn Academy, and not at (the nearby) Whitdale Primary School.
Therefore anyone wishing to come along to the open workshop/concert this Sunday Afternoon with the Whitburn Band and the Tullis Russell Youth Band at 3.30 pm, should now come along to Whitburn Academy.
The Scottish Brass Band Association is delighted to announce details of the 2013 Conducting Weekend Workshops.
Following the success of previous years, these two short courses, designed for either Advanced Conductors or Youth Band, New or less experienced conductors, will offer delegates tailored guidance and instruction from the esteemed conductors Ian Porthouse and Nigel Boddice. Both courses will take place on Saturday 13th April - Sunday 14th April at Whitdale Primary School, 55a Whitdalehead Road, Whitburn, West Lothian. EH47 8JU, commencing at 10.00am each day. Refreshments and buffet lunch is included and the Advanced Conductor Stream will also receive a complimentary score of the focus piece ‘The Red Priest'.
Due to the tailored, ‘hands-on' nature of the weekend, available spaces are limited in numbers, so it highly recommended that you register your place as soon as possible by contacting Andrew Duncan, Development Manager, Scottish Brass Band Association (andrewduncan@sbba.org.uk) as soon as possible.
Advanced Conductor Workshop
Ian Porthouse will lead the Advanced Conductor Stream, supported by the Whitburn Band - a weekend workshop ideal of experienced conductors to attend. The two sessions each day will cover various aspects of rehearsing, conducting and interpretation, using Philip Wilby's ‘The Red Priest' as the focus work.
The cost of this workshop is £90 and includes refreshments and a buffet lunch for both days, as well as a complimentary copy of the score to ‘The Red Priest'.
Youth Band/New and Less Experienced Conductors Workshop
Conductor Nigel Boddice will lead the workshop for Youth Band/New and Less Experienced Conductors, supported by the Tullis Russell Youth Band. The two sessions each day will cover the key aspects of conducting, including baton technique, rehearsal technique and band motivation.
The cost of this workshop is £50 and includes refreshments and a buffet lunch for both days.
Post Workshop Support
To maximise the benefits of the workshops to all delegates, it is intended to film parts of the sessions. These recordings will then be made available to the delegates for their reference and study to help further development their new found conducting skills.
Working Concert Finale
Both workshops conclude on Sunday 14th April with a short performance and open rehearsal as part of the afternoon workshop sessions. The ‘working concert' begins at 3.30pm and members of the general public are also welcome to attend this session for a nominal entry charge of just £3.00. This draws the busy weekend to a positive and demonstrative close by approximately 5.00pm.
The workshops, partly funded by Creative Scotland funding through the Youth Music Initiative, have proven to offer valuable instruction and insight, with extremely positive feedback received from past attendees. Please make sure you reserve your place as soon as possible by contacting Andrew Duncan (andrewduncan@sbba.org.uk) for further details and to be part of this productive and inspirational weekend.
