Peebles Silver Band are delighted to announce that BBC Young Musician of the year finalist and 1st Horn Player of the Black Dyke Band, Jonathan Bates, has agreed to conduct a workshop with Peebles Development Band in preperation for their entry into the Scottish Youth Championships in Perth.

This will be held on Sunday 4th November in Peebles Rugby Club.

Jonathan currently studies at Leeds College of Music and dedicates a large amount of time
to writing new music for brass bands. He has taken a keen interest in composition from an
early age and has already made a mark within the brass band world. In 2010 he received
his first real taste of success when a tenor horn solo he composed was premiered as part of
the Black Dyke Brass Arts Festival. From this, Jonathan came into contact with Black Dykes
Musical Associate, Professor Philip Wilby, who took a keen interest in Jonathan's composing
and continues to guide him through his developing compositional career.
In addition to working with Philip Wilby (Black Dyke's Musical Associate) Jonathan has also
had the opportunity to work with leading figures in the musical world including Edward
Gregson and Bramwell Tovey.

In April 2011, Jonathan's extended test-piece Within The Paths of Righteousness received
its world premiere, performed by the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. In 2012
Jonathan has enjoyed further success with two new works being premiered. The Flowers
Band performed Romani Fire Dance, to win the Butlins Mineworkers Championships; and
the Royal North College of Music brass band performed Tortuguero 6, a short funk based
concert work, as part of the final round concert for the 2012 BBC "Young Brass Musician of
the Year" competition.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the players of Peebles Development Band, aswell as myself, to work with a musician of the highest calibre from the top of the brass band world" says Daniel Williamson, Conductor of Peebles Development Band.

Immediately following the workshop the band will perform a short programme to showcase
their talents. This will take place in the Rugby Club at 4pm with entry open to all for a
small donation.
