SCOTS WIN MORTIMER AWARDS
At the British Open on Saturday 3rd September three Scots took to the stage to receive prestigious awards.
Rebekah Caldwell from Galston in Ayrshire and a former pupil of John Boax, from Ayrshire who studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and is a cornetist with Pemberton Old and formerly Faireys. Was awarded £500 and a Commerorative certificate from the 2011 Harry Mortimer Memorial Trust.
Also receiving the Harry Mortimer Memorial Trust and award for £500 and Commerorative certificate which is awarded to "outstanding young brass musicians to assist in their studies and training, as well as their musical careers", was Ailsa Russell from Carnoustie in Angus. A former pupil of Mike Robertson, Ailsa is going into her third year at the Royal Welsh College and is currently studying under Owen Farr and playing 1st Horn with the Cory Band (who were crowned British Open Champions 2011).
Alongside the girls was Mike Robertson from Carnoustie who won The Mortimer Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians which is "Endowed at the instigation of Mrs Margaret Mortimer in memory of her husband Harry, a Liveryman of the Company. The Medal is awarded in recognition of services for teaching of young people in the brass movement." It was a proud moment for the Scots to have three people on stage and to see a former pupil and teacher in Mike and Ailsa sit side by side showing what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.
Congratulations to all of them.
