Whitburn takes top honours at Brass in the Park
Whitburn Band, conducted by Archie Hutchinson, was victorious in the Open section at the 14th Brass in the Park Festival last weekend (11th September). West Lothian's premier brass band bounced back from the disappointment of relegation from a place in the British Open Championship, one of the UK's top brass band contests, with a confident display.
Brass in the Park requires the bands to play a march and a hymn tune and is open to brass bands of all levels. Taking the top prizes in the youth sections were : Kingdom Brass (Youth), conducted by Anne Crookston, in the Novice class; St. Ronan's Future Band (David Robb) in the Development section; Dalmellington Junior Band (Ian Taylor) in the Seniors; and West Lothian Schools (Nigel Boddice) in the Premier section. The Solo winners were Iain Fleming (Whitburn - Open Section ) and Christopher Hamilton (Unison Kinneil - Youth Section).
The Festival took place for the first time at the Scottish Mining Museum in Newtongrange. Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Julie Sanderson commented: 'We are delighted that so many bands supported the event this year. We were doubtful whether it could take place after the weather caused such havoc last year, so it was thrilling to see such a large crowd despite the change in date and venue. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves. We are already looking to make improvement for next year. The Mining Museum was a fantastic venue and it's hoped that we will be able to host Brass in the Park there again next year.'
