Disappointment for Scotland in Europe
The Newtongrange Silver band represented Scotland at the recent European Brass Band Championships held in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The band, conducted by Allan Ramsay, finished 9th in the own choice contest and 8th in the set work contest to finish 9th overall. The contest, held in the impressive Waterfront Hall, was won by Brass Band Willebroek from Belgium ahead of Brass Band Fribourg from Switzerland and the Buy As You View band from Wales. The defending Champions Black Dyke failed to impress the judges and finished in fourth place. With next years championships being held in Birmingham there is now the real possibility that representation at that event form the strongest member country may amount to just one band. None of that of course will matter to Willebroek who will go to Birmingham as defending champions, and such was their dominance here that they will fancy their chances of a double next year too.
