The Co’s creative concept for Brass in Concert

Good luck to our Scottish representative in this year’s Brass in Concert, the cooperation band, as members take to the stage at the Glasshouse International Centre for Music (formerly The Sage) in Gateshead on Saturday.

The band has prepared a programme which will transport the audience to Paris in 1913 where the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées is alive with excitement. As Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring begins, the glittering Parisian audience is unprepared for what they’re about to hear. Within minutes, the music erupts into chaos – boos, jeers and a riot that would change the course of music history.

the cooperation band is inviting the contest goers to step inside that night with “La Première”, a creative concept by principal conductor Katrina Marzella Wheeler.

It is a bold new programme that retells the scandal, the humour, the genius and the glamour behind one of the most infamous premieres in the musical history.

Guided by Coco Chanel (portrayed by actor Elizabeth McNally), the set features specially commissioned new works written exclusively for the band, alongside vivid arrangements by some of the brass world’s leading creative voices – Andrew Duncan, Lucy Pankhurst, Howard Snell and Simon Dobson.

The performance will mark an exciting new chapter for the band - a fresh artistic direction blending theatrical storytelling, original composition and the unforgettable energy of live brass performance.

Prior to its journey to the North East of England, the Co will be putting on an Open Rehearsal on Wednesday (12 November) evening at 7.30pm in the Govan and Linthouse Parish Church, 796 Govan Rd, Glasgow G51 2YL. Everyone is welcome!
