PVG scheme to become a legal requirement in Scotland

On 1 April, the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme becomes a legal requirement in Scotland under the Disclosure (Scotland) Act 2020.

Changes to legislation will make it a legal requirement for anyone working in a regulated role with young people or vulnerable adults to be a PVG member.

The Scottish Brass Band Association already encourages people working in such roles to have PVG membership as good practice. However there will be some changes to who is asked to have PVG checks completed due to this change in legislation.

SBBA child protection officer Caroline Farren is working on revising the association’s current policies and procedures in line with these changes, and updated guidance will go out to bands as soon as this is available.

Although the changes come into place from 1 April, there is a grace period which lasts until 1 July, and all those who are current PVG members are to be on-boarded into the new scheme (information on this is yet to be finalised).

In the meantime if any band CPOs wish to have PVGs carried out or make updates to their current list, they should contact Caroline at sbbacpo@gmail.com
