NYBBS concert was a fitting finale to a week of hard work and fun

Young Scottish banders were on their way home from Strathallan School in Perthshire last night, happy in the knowledge they had put on an inspiring show of brass musicianship for family and friends to mark the conclusion of their four-day Easter course.

The National Youth Brass Band of Scotland (NYBBS) end-of-course concert in the school’s theatre played to a packed house, as well as being broadcast live on the Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA) YouTube channel.

The one-hour programme was divided into two: the first half was a preview of the 20-minute set for the forthcoming European Youth Brass Band Competition, conducted by John Boax, followed by a varied selection of music which hit a huge crescendo as the band rose to the challenge of The Gael as a grand finale, conducted by Ian Porthouse.

Throughout the week the two MDs have been supported by Alan Fernie – as well as an impromptu visit by Brett Baker – in taking the 65 young players in sectional rehearsals and providing personal tuition.

The NYBBS band will be one of six international bands taking part in the European Youth Brass Band Competition on Saturday 30 April.

The course has been supported with grant funding from Creative Scotland through its Youth Music Initiative (YMI). #creativescots
