Sue’s wheely good repair job for Selkirk Silver

Bass players in particular know that when the wheels come off, life can be very trying. We’re talking about bass carrying cases.

The cost of replacing the cases can be prohibitive for many bands, but one – Selkirk Silver – has found a very cost-effective solution.

In the town, there is a not-for-profit repair shop run by Sue Briggs. Recently the band presented her with a number of bass cases that had seen their best days. First impressions were that they were battered, broken – especially around the wheels – and could not be salvaged.

But Sue had other ideas.  “We came up with a solution that mended any holes, reinforced the wheel area and replaced the wheels with a more robust type,” she explained. “The end result is three good-as-new cases for a fraction of the price of new, or even second-hand, ones.”

In light of this successful job for Selkirk Silver, she is now wondering if this is a service that might be of interest to other bands in Scotland.

“As a non-profit operation, we exist to help Scottish communities and organisations,” Sue added.  “We just charge what the work costs us and, consequently, our repairs are very reasonably priced.”

One of Selkirk’s bass players, before the repairs, had resorted to transporting his bass to and from the band hall without its case because moving it in its case had become so difficult. “It was just so stressful on my back,” he said. “Now moving the case around is just so much easier again.”

If any band would like to put Sue's instrument case repair skills to the test, you can contact her on 01750 22355 or 07470 198284. Her email address is generalstoreselkirk@gmail.com
