Sad passing of SBBA and Newtongrange Band stalwart

SBBA is sad to announce the passing of our Honorary Vice President, Alex Denholm of Newtongrange. Alex died on 6 July 2017 after a lengthy period of ill health. His funeral will take place at 12.30 pm on Thursday 13 July 2017 at Newbattle Cemetery, Newbattle Road, Dalkeith, Midlothian to which all friends are invited.
Alex began assisting Newtongrange Band in a behind the scenes capacity around 1983. He played a prominent role in the organisation of the Brass in the Park event, serving as Treasurer of the Brass in the Park Association. He also played an important role in Newtongrange’s Friends of the Band organisation, often being the point of contact with members. Always enjoying the opportunity to meet and befriend people, Alex would hand deliver the vast majority of the communications issued to members of the scheme. His friendly personal contact with members was a major contributing factor in the high level of community support which the band received for many of its projects at the time.
Alex served on the SBBA Executive for many years and became a familiar face to band members throughout Scotland through his role as part of the registration team at contests. His cheery smile and kindly remarks ensured he was a popular figure on contest days. Always immaculately dressed, Alex was simply a true gentleman. In a fitting acknowledgement of his contribution to Scottish banding, Alex was appointed as an Honorary Vice President of SBBA in 2006.
