Members of Dunaskin Doon Band were left heartbroken and devastated

Members of Dunaskin Doon Band were left heartbroken and devastated this week to learn of the death of their good friend and fellow player, Joan Price, on Monday 30th January.

Joan, who played 2nd trombone, was driving home from a rehearsal when her car was struck by another vehicle. Tragically, Joan was pronounced dead at the scene. Fellow Dunaskiner, Gillian Kay, who plays solo baritone with the band, was a passenger in the car. Despite being severely injured, Gillian is recovering steadily and is in remarkably good spirits. She hopes to be home from hospital soon.

Joan first picked up the trombone in first year at Kilmarnock Academy and was a founder member of the Kilmarnock Youth Band. Over the years, Joan has played for Kilmarnock Concert Brass, Irvine & Dreghorn Band, the Dave Anderson Big Band and most recently, Dunaskin Doon Band.

Joan was, quite simply, a lovely lady. She was graceful, cheerful and kind, ever encouraging to younger band members and a shining example of a true bandsman. The overwhelming number of supportive messages and offers of help by SBBA, the wider brass band community and individuals across Scotland is testament to the high regard in which Joan was held. Joan’s family have found great comfort in reading these messages over the past few days, and have asked that their thanks be passed on.

Words cannot express how much Joan will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her – she was a wife, a mother, a gran, a friend, a colleague, a bandsman, a proud Dunaskiner and a legend!

The band will play on, but some things are irreplaceable - you were so loved Joan and will always have a place in our hearts.
