FRIENDS and family members of the late Hugh Johnstone MBE have gathered for the renaming and dedication of the Dalmellington Community Centre to “The Hugh Johnstone MBE Memorial Hall.”
The event, on Sunday June 5, saw Dalmellington Community Association organise the celebration of Hugh's life in an evening of stories and music. Bert Ritchie, a lifelong friend, gave an amusing and moving tribute to the great man. Archie Hutchison, conducting the senior band, and Ian Taylor, with the youth band provided some musical memories and chat about their experience of working with Hugh.
An exhibition covering Hugh’s life had been set up in the lesser hall and tea was provided by the ladies and friends of Dalmellington.
The evening finished off with the unveiling of a plaque renaming the community hall to provide a permanent memorial to someone who had dedicated his life to the town and community of Dalmellington.
During the musical tributes it was highlighted the many players Hugh had taught and who have gone on to make a musical career for themselves.
Hugh’s daughter, Ucilla, has informed the Scottish Brass Band Association that a trophy will also be presented from the family at the 2017 Scottish Championships.
