FINAL preparations are underway ahead of the 15th annual Borders Entertainment Contest.

The event will make its second visit to Langholm on Saturday, November 7, when 17 bands battle for the Scottish Borders Trophy. Organised by the Scottish Borders Brass Band Association (SBBBA), the contest will take place in the Buccleuch Centre in front of adjudicators Richard Evans and Charlie Farren (voice over). Borders bands, Hawick, Jedforest, Langholm, Peebles, Selkirk and St Ronan's are among those taking part.

Scott Renwick, vice chairman of the SBBBA, said: "It gives me a unique pleasure to welcome everyone back to the Buccleuch Centre in the Muckle Toon of Langholm for the 15th annual Borders Entertainment Contest.

"I say unique as this has been an historic year of celebration for our hosts. Langholm Town Band marks its 200th anniversary as a brass band. From CD recordings to performing in Edinburgh's Usher Hall, this has certainly been a year to remember for all involved with the band. It is therefore a fitting gesture to bring the contest back to this splendid arena and be part of such a momentous chapter in the band's life.

"The theme, chosen by our hosts, requires all bands to play a piece of music written for film in their 15 minute programme. Be ready for some memorable scene music, opening credit rousers and epic finale send offs as our bands aim to impress with choice and technical ability in this varied, and hopefully enjoyable, field of music."

The contest is confined to second, third and fourth section bands and there will be prizes for the best band in each section, an entertainment and deportment prize as well as awards for the highest placed Borders Association band, best soloist, best bass section, best percussion section, best instrumentalist and best solo cornet.

Entry costs £5 or £2 for school children. The first band will be on stage at 10am, with the final band performing at around 6pm.
