Creetown in summer showcase

THE Creetown Silver Band has delighted audience members in Dumfries and Galloway at its recent summer concert.
In a varied programme which featured Mozart to Miller, and Gershwin to Peter Graham, the concert in Newton Stewart Cinema showed the versatility of the band. The first half was traditional in stature, featuring two soloists. Kyle Fitzsimmons, on cornet, gave an exciting and technically brilliant performance of The Nightingale while tenor horn player Rebekah Hughes played the Rondo from Mozart's Third Horn Concerto with much style and panache. This half ended with a relatively new piece by Paul Lovatt-Cooper called Excelsior.
The second half, in contrast, saw the band changing its formation to play music from the swing band era from stage and screen. The euphonium section featured in a sentimental arrangement of When I Fall In Love while Alan Fernie's version of Blueberry Hill set everyone's feet tapping.
At the end of the concert the audience showed its appreciation of the efforts of the band by demanding two encores.
