Brass bands dazzle at Edinburgh Festival

Tullis Russell Band at the Edinburgh International Festival

BRASS bands have enjoyed a starring role at the 2015 Edinburgh International Festival (EIF).

Fanfare, a day of outdoor music making, harnessed the enormous forces of Scotland's community of brass bands by presenting a day of free performances for everyone to enjoy, inspired by the performances of En avant, marche!

Throughout the day, audiences across the city were able to share the joy and passion of the live brass band. Participating bands included Kirkintilloch, Clackmannan, Kirkintilloch Kelvin, Co-operative Funeralcare, Newmilns and Galston, Newtongrange Silver, Jedforest Instrumental, St David's Brass, Whitburn, Johnstone and Tullis Russell bands.

Carrie Boax, president of the Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA), commented: "We are delighted that the EIF has given Scottish banding the opportunity to showcase itself on an international platform.

"It was a truly unique event, attracting appreciative crowds in their hundreds. With both the Fanfare event and the production of En Avant Marche featuring Dalkeith and Monktonhall Band, we hope that the relationship we have established will be the start of many more successful opportunities and collaborations between SBBA and EIF."

Fanfare received widespread media coverage, including a piece on BBC's Reporting Scotland programme.
