Renfrew Burgh Band takes third section title

Renfrew Burgh Band members celebrate.

RENFREW Burgh Band has tasted victory at the Scottish Brass Band Championships.

The ensemble won the title after wowing the judges in the third section of the Scottish Brass Band Association's flagship event in Perth Concert Hall on Saturday (March 14).

Conducted by Musical Director Mark Good, Renfrew impressed with its account of testpiece, Evolution: Five States of Change by Philip Sparke and managed to come out on top of the pile from a number one draw.

Further success came when the best instrumentalist prize was awarded to Renfrew's bass trombone player, Dominic McKeown.

Collecting the band's trophies at the awards ceremony was cornet player Kerryn Logan. The 18-year-old, who was playing in her first Scottish championship, said: "It's finally starting to sink in that we won.
"It came as a shock because there was a lot of competition and on the day anything can happen. I'm ecstatic and so pleased for the band members."

The victory at the Scottish Championships last weekend follows a win at the Scottish Challenge Cup in November last year. It means Renfrew will now represent Scotland at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain later in the year before being promoted to the second section ahead of the next competitive season.

David Hoey, chairman of RBB, commented: "Renfrew Burgh Band has been working tirelessly within the local Renfrewshire community for many years. This result is testament to the hard work, dedication and team spirit of the players within the organisation who dedicate a substantial amount of their free time to rehearsing.

"Everyone is looking forward to continuing to build on this success, both by representing Scotland at the national finals later in the year and continuing to perform at engagements in the local community.

"It is only with the relationship that exists amongst the band's players, Renfrewshire Council and local stakeholders within the community that Renfrew Burgh Band can continue to deliver a high quality musical performance for Renfrewshire.

"Long may that continue."
