Kenneth Crookston was born in West Lothian in 1963 and began playing the cornet at the age of five. Joining his first adult band at West Calder aged eight and Championship Section Broxburn two years later, he played both principal and soprano cornet and won numerous soloist prizes before, in 1982, joining Whitburn Band, then conducted by Major Peter Parkes.

#Over the next 23 years, he was a prominent player and administrator with Whitburn, performing frequently at the British Open, National and European Championships, as well as in concerts, recordings and broadcasts throughout Europe. He was also a member of the Scottish Brass Band Association Executive Committee during the organisation's resurgence in the early years of the 21st century.

In November 2004, Kenny took up the position of Editor of British Bandsman, the world's oldest weekly music magazine and most widely-read brass publication, which was established in 1887. Over the past ten years, he has maintained a near constant presence at major brass band events across Europe, acquiring a reputation as a discerning critic and insightful commentator on both musical and political matters. He has also produced major events like British Bandsman's 125th Anniversary Concert in Birmingham's Symphony Hall in 2012, directed the magazine's live-streaming of the European Championships from Linz (2010) and Perth (2014), and has adjudicated brass events for the BBC and at Siddis Brass in Norway. In addition, he is a board member of the Brass in Concert Championship and played a pivotal role in the rejuvenation of the format of that event over the past three years.

In December 2014, Kenny is due to give his 30th performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, as part of the Frank Renton Concert Brass for which he has played for the past decade, but he was equally proud to make his 4th Section Scottish Championships debut in March this year, performing with the newly-formed Whitburn Heartlands Band.
