The Scottish Borders Brass Band Association are delighted to announce that the 13th annual Entertainment contest will take place on Saturday November 2nd, in the splendid setting of the Town Hall in Jedburgh. There is a cracking entry of 21 bands from all over Scotland and the North East of England, hoping to impress two judges - Gareth Bowman, a talented and promising young conductor and teacher from Glasgow, and, in a bit of a coup for the organisers, brass bands "man of the moment", Philip Harper, conductor of the world's leading band, the Cory band, from Wales.

The theme for this year's contest, which is specifically for bands in sections 2, 3 and 4, is for each band to feature at one least piece by the distinguished arranger and composer Gordon Langford within a 15 minute programme.

An interesting feature of this contest is the use of voiceover adjudication, kindly facilitated by Nigel Durno of Just Music - Philip Harper, will record his thoughts on each bands' performance verbally, directly on to a CD, which will then be given to the bands at the conclusion of the day. This innovative system allows players and conductors to hear the thoughts of the judge alongside their performance. This has been very well received in the past 2 years it's been used. Gareth Bowman will write remarks in the traditional manner. Both judges, whilst non conferring, will be sitting in the open, and their individual marks collated to give the final result.

The Chairman of the Scottish Borders Brass Band Association, Alan Fernie commented " The Borders contest has developed into one of the most popular days out in the Scottish band calendar, and we're delighted with not only the large entry, but the positive support we receive for the innovations we use in this contest. We're particularly indebted to Nigel Durno, the Scottish Brass Band Association, and not least to this year's host band, Jedforest Instrumental"

As always,s with the honeyed tones of the Borders very own Alasdair Hutton as compere, the action kicks off with the first band playing at 9.15am, and the results are expected around 7.30pm.
