Whitburn Band is saddened to hear of the passing of the band's former Principal Cornet player Alex Melville.
Alex was a major part of the band's success in the 1970s. During more than a decade with Whitburn he won five Scottish titles, and in 1974 won the Terris Medal for the Best Cornet player at the Scottish Championships.
Alex also led the band to many other successes including the Edinburgh Charities, Edinburgh Festival and BBC Fanfare contests to name but a few.
His dedication to music and high standards, not only whilst with the Whitburn Band but also the many other bands and ensembles that Alex performed with, gained him great respect amongst his fellow musicians.
All members of the Whitburn Band mourn the passing of a fantastic musician and send our deepest condolences to the Melville family and friends.
