68th Annual Cecil Oughton Senior Slow Melody Results

A ‘full house' audience thoroughly enjoyed Dalmellington Band's 68th Senior Slow Melody Event in the Doon Academy Assembly Hall on Saturday 6th April

19 senior band soloists performed many well-known tunes to try and impress Adjudicator - John Doyle
( Soprano Cornet Soloist with the Leyland Band in the north of England and former Flugel Horn Soloist with the famous Black Dyke Band in Yorkshire ) and he admitted that it had been a difficult job with so many good performances throughout the competition.

The full results were:-
1st Prize, winning the Cecil Oughton Trophy ..... Shona Hutchison on tenor horn.
2nd Prize, winning the Billy Campbell Trophy ..... Gary Williams on euphonium.
3rd Prize, winning the John Pauline Trophy ..... John Boax on cornet.
4th Prize, winning the Ivy Campbell Trophy ..... Elaine Roxburgh on flugel horn.

Best Bass, winning the Tyson Trophy ..... Brian Mackie on Eb bass.
Best Euphonium / Baritone, winning the John McCulloch Trophy ..... Gary Williams on euphonium.
Best Horn / Flugel, winning the John Brown Trophy ..... Shona Hutchison on tenor horn.
Best Cornet, winning the Juby McCulloch Trophy ..... John Boax.

The Dale Salver, awarded by the players, to the person who has given exceptional service to the band during the year was won by Ian Taylor ( euphonium player and junior band conductor ).

The Mary Reid Quaich, awarded by the band committee, to the person who has given exceptional service "behind the scenes" was won by John Mitchell ( chairman of the junior band organising team ).

Following the results the audience enjoyed one of the best concerts we have ever had, featuring the guest soloist - John Doyle. John was absolutely superb and gave solos on three different instruments - trumpet, soprano and flugel horn and brought the house done with his musical skills.

Our thanks to Archie Hutchison, Band's Musical Director, for presenting a very entertaining programme!

Our thanks also to John & Elaine Mitchell for presenting our prizes this year.

Due to works at the band's normal venue - Dalmellington Community Centre, the event had to be switched to Doon Academy and our very sincere thanks to the janitors and kitchen staff at the school and to officers and staff at East Ayrshire Council who gave great assistance to allow this prestigious event to continue this year!

2014 will be our 150th year ..... look out for some fantastic events to come!
