b.) Concert programme format to include the following:
• New arrangement or composition, published, or unpublished, from January 2012 to the present, i.e. June 2013

Please note: one piece of music can meet two of the above criteria, if required
Programme of music to be 25 minutes maximum duration, being actual playing time exclusive of Compere/Conductor's introductions. Any band which exceeds 26 minutes actual playing time will have 1.5 points deducted from its overall total.
Guest players may not be featured as a main soloist and will not be eligible for the solo prize.
To assist bands in choosing their programmes, the following mission statement defining the purpose of the contest is given:
‘The West Lothian Festival of Brass strives to provide a platform for Scotland's finest brass bands to display, free of artistic restriction other than within the confines of the required elements of the contest, their excellence as performers of high-quality original and arranged brass band music, through programmes and presentation reflecting the most current and progressive form of the genre and designed to appeal to both the general listener and brass band enthusiasts.'
In applying the principles of the event as stated above, the adjudicators will independently judge each performance in the following categories:
QUALITY OF MUSICAL PERFORMANCE - 50 percent of the total
PROGRAMME CONTENT - 20 percent of the total
ENTERTAINMENT AND PRESENTATION - 30 percent of the total
There will be three adjudicators who will be seated independently and will not consult with each other. Each adjudicator will have responsibility for one of the three areas of the bands' performances outlined above and will each place the bands from 1 to 6 in accordance with the scoring system. In the event of a tie for any overall positions, the band with the highest score for Quality of Musical Performance shall take precedence.
1. Quality of Musical Performance - This adjudicator will judge the bands purely on the quality of playing. This adjudicator will have 50% of the total points available. The winning band in this category shall be awarded 100 points and there will be a differential of 5 points between each subsequent position.
2. Entertainment and Presentation - This adjudicator will judge the bands on elements of entertainment and presentation in their performances. This adjudicator will have 30% of the total points available and will also choose the best soloist and best section piece awards. The winning band in this category shall be awarded 60 points and there will be a differential of 3 points between each subsequent position.
3. Quality of the Programme - This adjudicator will judge the bands on the quality of their musical programmes, including programme balance and the originality of the music played. This adjudicator will have 20% of the total points available and will also choose the best new composition or arrangement. The winning band in this category shall be awarded 40 points and there will be a differential of 2 points between each subsequent position.
NB: The maximum total number of points available is 200 and it is likely in the implementation of this new system that the overall spread of points will be vastly greater than that normally experienced in band contests.
Prizes: The prize fund will be divided as follows:
a.) Each band will receive £150 participation fee.
b.) The winning band will receive £500 and the West Lothian Festival of Brass Trophy.
c.) Best new arrangement or composition, best performance of a piece by Peter Meechan, best solo and best section piece will each receive a trophy.
NOTE: Bands will be responsible for making contact with the technical team at the Howden Park Centre before the event to inform them of technical requirements for their presentations.
