Newland Concert Brass was formed in Bathgate, West Lothian in 1987. The name "Newland" was taken from the venue where the first rehearsal took place ie . Newland Academy in Bathgate whose benefactor was John Newland. The blue uniform of Newland is well recognised in West Lothian as a result of playing at gala days, concerts, community events and the Bathgate Procession and John Newland Festival. Newland have contested in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th sections over the years and have qualified for the National Finals on three occasions. Newland Concert Brass continue to recognise the importance of youth development and also have a Junior Band who have taken part in the Youth Championships in Perth for the last two years.
In 1988 the band made its first trip abroad; a concert tour of Hochsaurland in Germany. This visit developed links with both the area and a German band, Neheim-Husten Fanfarenkorps. The following year a partnership was agreed and since then both bands have taken part in many memorable exchange visits. Some of the younger members of Newland Concert Brass took part in an International Youth Music Camp in Cran-Gevrier, France in July 2011 as part of the new twinning agreement between the towns of Bathgate and Cran-Gevrier. Newland Concert Brass hosted a very successful second International Youth Music Camp in Scotland in July 2012 under the direction of Newland Junior Band conductor Mark Good.
Newland Concert Brass were delighted to welcome Andy Shaw as their new Musical Director earlier this year. Andy, who was previously Resident Conductor of Tullis Russell Mills band is also the Musical Director for Dunfermline Town Band as well as Newland Concert Brass. An experienced bass trombone player who currently plays with the Lochgelly Band, he has already taken part in several successful concerts with Newland. Andy is in the process of making a lifetime career change in the direction of music having completed 2 years of the Bachelor of Education (Music) degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Newland junior and senior bands are both looking forward to their concert next month to celebrate 25 years. We hope to see you there!
