A great result but still a loss for TR
For the fifth contest in succession the Tullis Russell Mills Band from Glenrothes, Fife have suffered a severe loss only three days before their latest contest appearance at the Land O Burns on Saturday at Troon where the band won the second section and where fourth in the open contest. The bands second cornet player Jane Nicholson was rushed into hospital with a serious back problem and was therefore unable to take part in the bands performance. This is now the fifth contest in succession that the band have had a player taken to hospital the week of a contest.
It all started last October at the Fife Charities Contest when the bands Soprano cornet player woke up with an ear infection which affected his balance and he could not walk upright, next up was the Borders entertainment contest and the bands bass trombone suffered a burst appendix the week of the contest and was rushed into hospital. At this years Scottish Championships in February the bands solo Trombone was hospitalised three days before the championships in Perth and the band had to move a cornet player onto solo trombone on the day. And then in April this year the bands Repiano cornet was taken into hospital with suspected appendicitis and missed the Fife Festival of Brass contest.
The bands conductor Martyn Ramsay whose first contest with the band was last October when this all started has had to make some serious last minute changes at ever contest he has conducted. A band spokesman said "the band have become very adept at moving players at the last minute, but it's really a problem we could well do without". The band will be at the Fife Charities contest again in October and it's hoped that the players in the band rehearsing the week before the contest are the same band which takes to the stage on the day.
