TUBA DREAMS SUCCESS

St. Ronan's Silver Band from Innerleithen has scooped £60,000 of National Lottery money in the Jubilee People's Millions competition.

The Innerleithen musicians had been hastily summoned to St. Ronan's School for the lunchtime recording session with an ITV crew when Border presenter Fiona Armstrong appeared with the £60,000 cheque, confirming the fantastic win. Band Chairman, Murray Charters was jubilant: "We are absolutely delighted with this brilliant result. It means we can give the next generation of brass players and percussionists the opportunity to learn to play," he said.

"We have been overwhelmed by the support for our 'Tuba Dreams' project and would like to say a massive thank you to the many people who took time to vote for us on Monday and helped make the dream a reality. Without the huge effort of our members, families, friends and supporters we could never have achieved this win - £60,000 will set us well on the way to a full new set of instruments," he added.

The People's Millions is a grants programme run by the Big Lottery Fund in partnership with ITV every year since 2005. To date they have made a total of 463 awards worth over £24.5 million. The programme aims at getting the public more involved in deciding which projects to support. This year the People's Millions have £3.6 million to give out to projects in each of the 15 ITV regional news areas.

St. Ronan's Silver Band, based in the Borders town of Innerleithen, has made it to the final of the Jubilee People's Millions 2011. The Band's ‘Tuba Dreams' project is a bid to win £60,000 to supply the Band with new instruments to allow more young people and members of the community to play.

The competition will get underway at 9.00am on Monday 27 June when the special phone number will be released to vote for the project. Voting continues until 12 midnight with the result announced the next day.

At two hundred years old, St. Ronan's may be the oldest band in Scotland, but it is certainly one of the most active, playing at around fifty engagements each year. The outfit currently supports a training section, youth band and senior band, but a lack of instruments has meant that the family of bands has not been able to continue its growth.

"We have an amazing opportunity, through the Jubilee People's Millions, to give more people the opportunity to play and more people the opportunity to listen to and enjoy our music," explained Band Chairman Murray Charters. "We want everyone to vote for ‘Tuba Dreams' on Monday 27 June and help live music thrive in the Borders and beyond," he added.

The phone number will be available on Monday 27 June at www.peoplesmillions.org.uk or www.stronanssilverband.org as well as within the Daily Mirror newspaper. Each line is allowed ten votes with each call costs just 11 pence.

The People's Millions is a grants programme run by the Big Lottery Fund, in partnership with ITV. This year they have £3.6 million to give out and expect to award up to £60,000 (including VAT) to four projects in each of the 15 ITV regional news areas; 60 awards in total.
