About John Doyle:John is heralded as one of the leading performers on the cornet, flugel horn and trumpet and is great demand as a soloist, conductor, adjudicator and educator. Heralding from the Preston (Lancashire) area, John started playing brass instruments from the tender age of 13. His banding development included playing for Lancashire Youth Brass Band, Lostock Hall Memorial Band, Feckleton Band, the BT Band and the Fairey Band. He gained a place to study music at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, achieving a 2:1 qualification.
John spent 10 years at the famous Black Dyke Band. The beautiful flugel horn solo, Doyle's Lament was an original melody written for him as part of the Call of the Cossacks Suite, a commission for Black Dyke.
John is now a part of the Leyland Band, a world renowned independent brass ensemble and a regular on ‘Listen to the Band' on Radio 2, both as Principle Cornet and Associate Conductor.
John has also recorded music for the "Ground Force", "Dinnerladies", "Jools Holland Live" and "Songs of Praise" television programmes, and worked with diverse artists such as Peter Gabriel, Beautiful South, The Eels, Moby, Billy Bragg, Craig David, Gabrielle, Merz and most recently, Kate Rusby.
John currently tutors with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, and is musical director of the Lancashire Schools Symphony Orchestra. He has begun an adjudicating career, judging slow melody competitions and at the National Youth Band Championships of Great Britain.
John currently holds the position of Head of Performing Arts and Music at the Lostock Hall Community High School and Arts College (Preston), and is a teaching fellow of the University of Cumbria, and a "Fast Track Teacher" and a "Champion Teacher" for Musical Futures. He has also been awarded the title of "Champion" with Lancashire Music Service for his work as a dynamic head of music in the Lancashire region.
We're delighted to have John as adjudicator and guest player for our first Annual Slow Melody Contest and Concert.
About Irvine and Dreghorn Brass:
Irvine and Dreghorn Brass band have been in existence since the early 70's. At that time local brass teachers found that there were insufficient children or instruments at any one local school to form a brass band, but this could be achieved by bringing together children from different schools. Since then we have grown to a local band open to all. We are currently a second section band with the Scottish Brass Band Association and compete regularly at competitions and we also play regularly to crowds across Ayrshire, particularly in the Summer and Winter months. We are a registered Scottish charity.
We recently established a training band and are proud to have them play at the contest and concert. If you are interested in joining the training band, please contact Kelda (07875 426329) or Claire (07967 810042) for more information.
