World class Tuba star to lead Youth Brass Extravaganza in Perth
On Sunday 3rd October, young super star of the tuba, Les Neish, brings his conducting baton as well as bass to a day of learning, practice and performance at the Perth Music Centre for a new band of young players, many of whom will be experiencing the joy of playing in a brass band for the first time. Upwards of 60 junior players and some 30 seniors will take part in the day's activities, which will begin at 10.00 am with Les Neish's trademark warm-up session. The players will then divide up into their sections to begin working on the pieces which they will perform later in the day. They will be supported by brass and percussion tutors from Perth & Kinross. A full rehearsal will enable the young band to finalise preparations for performance, in which it will be joined by Perthshire Brass. The Youth Brass Extravaganza will culminate at 4.00pm in an hour's concert, part of which will be conducted by Les Neish.
Entry to the Youth Brass Extravaganza workshop day is free of charge and open to all young brass players of Grade 2 standard or higher. This will be the first in a series of workshop events due to take place in the area, hosted on this occasion by Allan Young and his team at Perth & Kinross Council. On behalf of the Northern Counties Brass Band Association (NCBBA), Ann Murray commented: "We are indebted to Perth & Kinross Council for their support with this venture, the second in a valuable series of rewarding and enjoyable events for the NCBBA."
The Scottish Brass Band Association's (SBBA) Development Officer, Alan Edmond, commented: "The SBBA is delighted to be supporting the weekend's events as part of our continuing Youth Development Programme. Attracting a musician of Les Neish's quality is a real coup for both the Midlothian Arts and Creativity Team and the Northern Counties Brass Band Association. Those attending the events are in for a memorable experience."
It is hoped that future events within the NCBBA area will nurture the organisation's relationships with the other local education authorities, resulting in an influx of new, young brass talent in the region.
Youth Brass Extravaganza begins at 10.00am at Perth Music Centre, St. John's Campus, Perth.
