Scottish Pride On Show In Harrogate

Scotlands representatives did us proud at the Lower Section National Finals in Harrogate at the weekend (23rd/24th September). Five of our eight bands achieved top six finishes, a result which bodes well for the general health of brass banding in Scotland.

In the 1st section, Dalmellington gave a very good performance to finish in fourth place on the testpiece ‚Äö?Ñ??Ballet From A Perfect Fool‚Äö?Ñ??. Unfortunately Broxburn & Livingston finished well down the order but the experience of their first National Finals weekend will stand the band in good stead for the future.

In the 2nd section contest both of the qualifying bands from Scotland acquitted themselves well with City of Discovery finishing fourth and Barrhead Burgh close behind in sixth. The testpiece for this section was ‚Äö?Ñ??Gothic Dances‚Äö?Ñ?? by Scotsman Alan Fernie, who also sat in the adjudicators box for this section.

The 3rd section contest was one where Scotland had real hope of producing a Champion band, with the much fancied Tullis Russell. Unfortunately, a scrambled start to the first movement of Gordon Langford's "Sinfonietta For Brass Band" cost them, but they did enough to secure third place, the highest placing achieved by any Scottish band over the weekend. Not to be outdone, Broxburn Silver also gave a very good account of themselves as they claimed sixth place.

In the 4th section contest neither Bon Accord ‚Äö?Ñ??B‚Äö?Ñ?¥ nor Turriff Silver gave performances of Sparke's "Valerius Variations" which impressed the adjudicators and both bands finished well down the order. However, they can console themselves with the fact that they were here, among the top twenty-two bands in the country at this level.
