Brass and Percussion Workshop
Three of the UK?s top conductors are set to take part in an event aimed at young brass and percussion players later this month.
The Scottish Borders Brass Band Association is organising a Brass and Percussion Workshop for school-aged children to be held in Galashiels Academy on Sunday 23 April from 10.00am to 5.00pm.
The players will be organised into three bands and will be tutored by a team of experienced teachers. ?We are very honoured to have Nigel Boddice OBE to conduct the A-Band,? explained Association Chairman Alan Fernie. ?Nigel was the highly respected principal trumpeter with the BBC for over 20 years and is currently professor of conducting and trumpet at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow,? Mr Fernie continued. In addition, Nigel Boddice is conductor of the UK's leading youth band, West Lothian Schools Brass Band and was awarded an OBE for services to Scottish music. ?We are really honoured to have Nigel taking part in this event; his presence is already attracting interest from players of all ages,? Mr Fernie added.
In an effort to foster relations with banding neighbours over the Border in Cumbria and Northumberland, the Borders Association has engaged the services of the much respected David Dye from Hexham to conduct the B-Band. David is a former Solo Horn player with the famous Ever Ready Band and an esteemed teacher and band trainer in the Co. Durham area. He is currently Musical Director of the Carlisle St. Stephen's Band.
The C-Band (for beginners) will be conducted by the Association?s Chairman, Scottish composer, arranger and conductor, Alan Fernie. Alan, who hails originally from Newtongrange, now stays in the Borders and is conductor of a number of Scottish Bands.
The A and B-Bands will meet at 10.00am on the 23 April at Galasheils Academy for a 10.30am start, while the C-Band will meet at 1.00pm for a 1.30pm start. All three bands will present an informal concert at 4.00pm to which parents and friends are invited.
