14 bands in West of Scotland contest line-up

Fourteen bands will be taking to the stage at the Walker Halls, Troon, on Saturday to participate in the West of Scotland entertainment contest.

Bands will be required to play a 20-minute programme of music which must contain a solo by any instrument to be adjudicated by Leigh Baker. Entertainment judge is Vanessa Baker.

The line-up of bands is:

• Coalburn Silver (Gareth Bowman)
• Dalmellington (Ralph Brill)
• Dunaskin Doon (Chris Bradley)
• Irvine & Dreghorn (Joshua Parkhill)
• Johnstone (Raymond Tennant)
• Kirkintilloch (Martyn Ramsay)
• McTaggart Scott (Amy Paterson)
• Newmains & District (Robert Fraser)
• Newmilns & Galston (Alan Friel)
• Renfrew Burgh (Mark Good)
• Shotts St Patrick’s (Charlie Farren)
• Unite Scotland Kinneil (Paul Drury)

The top award of the day is the William Beardmore Shield. There will also be prizes for the best band in each section, as well as for those bands in first to fourth places overall. Awards will also be made to the conductor of winning band and for best solo cornet, best bass section and most entertaining programme.

There are two new trophies this year for the best soloist and the best percussion section.

Entry is £8 (concessions £5 and young children free with full paying adult) for the whole day’s entertainment. Doors open at 9am and the first band will play 30 minutes later.

Food and drink will be available throughout the day from a limited bar and cafe service.
