100 Tubas feature at Lammermuir Festival

Tuesday 30 June 2026

Red Note Ensemble, Scotland's contemporary music ensemble, has organised a gathering of 100 tuba players to put on a rare performance of Anthony Braxton's Composition No. 19 (For 100 Tubas) as part of the 2026 Lammermuir Festival in East Lothian in September.

Written in the 1970s, the piece transforms the tuba into a vast collective instrument which exhibits layers of sustained sound, shifting textures and powerful spatial effects that creates a remarkable atmosphere and resonance.

The performance – dedicated to the memory of John Wallace – will take place in the glorious natural and acoustical surroundings of the Amisfield Walled Garden in Haddington – around 30 minutes from Edinburgh – on Saturday 19 September, featuring various euphonium, baritone, tenor horn and tuba instruments to create additional tonal texture.

Further information on this event is available on the Lammermuir Festival website.
