Brass and percussion players in Borders workshop

Thursday 2 April 2026

Fifty-seven young people attended a brass and percussion workshop organised by the Scottish Borders Brass Band Association. The event took place at the Langlee Community Centre in Galashiels.

At the end of a day’s tuition, during which the players were categorised into three bands according to their experience, a finale concert was put on for a packed hall to show the progress made on their chosen music.

Workshop tutors Colin Kemp, John Barber and Stuart Black

The A Band was tutored by Foden’s Band principal trombonist John Barber on a programme which included Blaze Away, If You Don’t Know Me By Now, Drop The Dog and Bolero.

The B Band, directed by cornetist Colin Kemp, entertained the audience with Cheesy Feet Rock, Odds Socks, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Football Frenzy and All Summer Long.

The learners in the C Band were conducted by Stuart Black and played Fanfare for St David’s, Sleepy Bears and the Monkey March.

The SBBBA committee is grateful to the Weir Charitable Trust for financial support, OS Workplace for the loan of a van, T42 Catering and all helpers, parents and carers.

The next workshop is planned for Sunday 27 September.
