Coalburn’s ‘unsung hero’ honoured at pre-Championships concert
Friday 6 March 2026The Coalburn Brass Band Family filled the Bellshill Salvation Army on Sunday to deliver a final public showcase before members travel to this weekend’s Scottish Championships in Perth.
The concert provided the opportunity for both the Intermediate and Silver bands to perform their competition test pieces to a supportive audience. The bands also received expert written feedback from esteemed adjudicator and conductor Lynda Nicholson.
The afternoon reached an emotional peak with the presentation of the Beth Damer Memorial Award. Commissioned by the Damer family in 2023 following Beth’s tragic passing days before her 21st birthday, the award is voted on by the committee to recognise members who demonstrate exceptional commitment, empathy, and teamwork.

This year’s recipient was Gill Howarth, tutor for the beginners' group and Bronze Band. The committee was unanimous in their praise, sharing tributes that underscore Gill’s impact on the organisation:
"Gill is an unsung hero who works quietly in the background, yet her work is absolutely critical to the growth of our organisation," the committee noted. "She has been an ever-present member for several years now and possesses the patience of a saint. She cares for the children, nurturing them and always remaining positive. Her work with the youngsters in our beginners' groups is truly inspiring."
The award was presented (above) to Gill by John Damer, Beth’s father, in a moving moment of recognition for her "truly deserved" contribution to the organisation’s future.
The Bronze Band also took the spotlight to showcase their talent, with six new members performing in their first concert.
The event served as a bittersweet farewell to Debbie Court, who has stood down from the committee after more than 14 years as the Bronze Band coordinator. Debbie was recognised for her integral role in managing the band and supporting the families of young players over the years.
The organisation also celebrated the incredible longevity of its members with several long service awards (berlow):
40 years: Joanne Lang
15 years: Anna Biggart, Rachel Carmichael, and Susan Kelso
10 years: Cameron Raeburn
