Alex Ramsay takes over as principal cornet of the cooperation band
Friday 2 January 2026the cooperation band has announced the appointment of Alex Ramsay as principal cornet following the departure of Jim Hayes after two decades of service to the band.
Alex has been an integral part of the band for almost 20 years – with the exception of a brief break in 2021 – and has contributed to many of its successes from a wide range of seats, including front row and principal cornet, flugel and repiano.
His long-standing association with the band, combined with his experience and musical leadership, made him a natural choice to lead the cornet section from the end chair.
Alex’s appointment follows a period of outstanding performances, including being awarded Best Principal Cornet at Brass in Concert 2025.
Commented Alex: “I’m deeply honoured to take on the principal cornet role permanently with the band and to follow in the footsteps of some truly great players who have occupied this chair before me.
“This band has been an integral part of my musical life for almost 20 years, and I’ve been privileged to play in so many different seats, contributing to some incredible achievements.
“Leading the section from the end chair is a responsibility I take very seriously and I’m excited to work alongside Katrina Marzella Wheeler and Glenn Van Looy as we work towards a successful 2026.”
