Musselburgh and Fisherrow Trades Band decides to call it a day
Sunday 21 December 2025The Scottish Brass Band Association is saddened to learn of the demise of one of East Lothian’s bands. The Musselburgh and Fisherrow Trades Band – know locally as ‘The Toun Band’ – has decided to call it a day after 135 years due to a lack of numbers and the fact that the local council had decided to mothball the Town Hall where the band rehearsed.
The non-contesting band boasted a rich history, often noted for its strong community ties, participating in local traditions and even enlisting as a battalion band for the Royal Scots Regiment.
Its roots were deeply embedded in the local identity of the historic Scottish burgh of Musselburgh. A significant moment in its history was the mass enlistment in 1915 to form a battalion band for the Royal Scots Regiment.
The band remained a vital part of Musselburgh's ceremonial life, leading parades for events like the Riding of the Marches, a tradition it upheld for decades.
Drawing its membership from surrounding mining and farming communities, the band represented decades of local pride and musical tradition, continuing to play a central role in Musselburgh's cultural fabric.
Musselburgh and Fisherrow Trades Band treasurer Jim Watson has told SBBA secretary Tom Allan: “Unfortunately. after 135 years. due to lack of numbers and the local council mothballing the Town Hall where we practised, the remaining members have decided to call it a day and disband.
“We would like to thank SBBA for its help over the years.”
