Festive appeal for unwanted instruments for Kenyan brass programme
Thursday 18 December 2025In this season of festive cheer and goodwill to all, the Scottish Brass Band Association has received a touching appeal from a community-based band in Kenya for any unwanted or surplus instruments so that it can continue teaching young people to play music.
Pastor Paul Oduori of the Maranatha House of Praise Church leads a brass programme in Ganjala, Kenya, which currently trains over 100 children and young people, including orphans and youths living with disabilities.
He explained: “The project provides structured music education, marching discipline and life skills that help participants develop confidence, teamwork and personal responsibility. For many of these children, the programme provides mentorship, inclusion and hope.
“Despite the strong commitment of the participants, our ministry is severely limited by a shortage of instruments. At present, training is conducted using only one snare drum, one bass drum, one pair of cymbals and one trumpet, all shared among the learners.
“Even with only a few shared instruments, the young people show up every day with incredible excitement and determination.”

In order to extend the brass programme, Paul (pictured with his students) is requesting support through donated brass and percussion instruments, particularly used or second-hand instruments in usable condition.
“Instruments that are no longer in use by bands, churches or individuals would make a significant difference in expanding this ministry,” he added.
