John’s life membership for his sterling service to banding
Wednesday 12 November 2025Cornet player and one time conductor of Galashiels Town Band, John Mabon has received his life membership of the Scottish Brass Band Association for his lengthy service to the brass banding community.
John first joined the band as a young cornetist and during his playing career has performed with Selkirk Silver, St Boswells Concert and Jedforest Instrumental bands as well as conducting at Hawick Saxhorn.
John is the definition of a ‘weel kent face’ on the banding scene, having also been the head of music at Berwickshire High School. To this day, he still comperes and adjudicates at various contests up and down the country.
There probably aren’t many players in the Galashiels area who haven’t been taught or conducted by John or played in a band alongside him!
John’s well deserved SBBA medal was presented by band master Neal Wade (on the left) at a recent rehearsal. Congratulations!
